James 2:14-26

Oh Father, as we read this famous passage we admit that there has been much confusion and disagreement over what James meant. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, for not looking at this kind of a passage with the balance of the rest of scripture. Lord, we have allowed extremes to flourish, both on the grace side (so sin is okay), and on the works side (so we have lost the meaning of grace). Lord, give us, thru Your word, the proper balance in our lives and cause us to be called Your friend, just like You called Abraham Your friend. In the name of Your Son, who did the work of dying on the cross, and had faith in You to raise Him from the dead, we pray, amen.

James 1:12-15

Lord, James tells us that a man who endures trials is blessed, because when he passes the test he will receive the crown of life that You have promised to those who love You. When we are undergoing a trial we should never say, “I am being tempted by God.” For while You allow things into our lives, You are not tempted by evil, and do not tempt anyone with evil.  We are tempted Lord, when we let ourselves be drawn away and enticed by our own evil desires. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, because these desires often come when we do not handle difficulties through Your truth, Your revealed word. Instead, we handle them through our own desires.  Then after our desires are conceived and focused on, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death, as we are reminded of, not just here, but in Romans 8:6 also. In Your Son’s name we pray, grateful that You love us in spite of us, amen.

James 1:9-11

Father, forgive us as a nation and as Your church for not being content, whether it be in our finances or our relationships, our business, being intellectually accepted by those around us, or any other humble position. Lord, speaking of money, the writer of Hebrews tells us to be content because You will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 11:5). And Paul told us that he has learned to be content in ALL things (Philippians 4:11) and so should we. Lord, cause us to realize that when we are NOT content, we will fade away, or wither away, while perusing  all the things we THOUGHT were to be sought after. Oh Father, with great repentance we pray in Your Son’s name, amen.

Psalm 119:169-176

Application              I choose to follow Your commands

Today’s Prayer

O Lord, I am so excited that Your Son told us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30), for now I understand that they really are! Forgive me, and forgive us, as a nation and as Your church, for doubting Christ’s words, for while it does not at first make sense, we see immediately upon following Your commands, that You give us a helping hand (Psalm 119:173) so that we see that submitting to You (James 4:7) the yoke really is easy and the burden really is light. Cause us Lord, as a nation and as Your church, to experience that in praying for one another, the Spirit of Your Son helps us, which leads to our deliverance (Philippians 1:19) including from the burdens we carry. Cause us Lord to praise You, especially as Your regulations help us (Psalm 119:175).

Psalm 119:161-168

Application              I obey Your commands, for all that I do is before You

Today’s Prayer

Thank You Father for the saints that recognize that they need to obey You, after all, everything that they do is before You (Psalm 119:168). Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church for thinking that we can hide our sin from You, Oh Lord, we know our sin, it is always before us (Psalm 51:3), but in the midst of our unrepentance, we choose to not obey Your laws, we choose to love our sin more (Psalm 119:167). Forgive us for this too Father, and cause us to acknowledge our sins Lord (Isaiah 59:12) and to recognize that the evil we do is done in Your sight (Psalm 51:4). Thank You Lord that when we confess our sins, that You are faithful and just to forgive us (1 John 1:9) immediately!

Today’s Prayer

Oh Lord, we thank You that Your mercy is great, that You revive us and You rescue us according to Your ordinances (Psalm 119:156). Father, forgive us as a nation and as Your church for turning from Your laws when we are persecuted (Psalm 119:157), and cause us Lord to entrust our distress to You, to Your great mercy for we know that then we will fall into Your hands, and not the hands of the evil one (2 Samuel 24:14).

Psalm 119:145-152

Application              I rise, cry for help and put my hope in Your words

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You that when we are in distress, we can cry out to You, in the evening, in the morning, at noon time, and you hear our voice (Psalm 55:17). Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, for NOT rising early, for being too lazy to get up before the sun, to cry out for help, for NOT putting our hope in Your words (Psalm 119:147). Father, as You forgive us, cause us to lift up our requests before You, and wait in expectation (Psalm 5:3), cause us to wait on You, for our soul to wait on You and for our hope to be in Your word (Psalm 130:5) for we know that it (Your word) lasts forever (Psalm 119:148).

Psalm 119:137-144

Application              I don’t forget Your commandments as they are my delight.

Today’s Prayer

O Lord, forgive us as a nation and as Your church for finding our delight in other things, forgive us for not remembering, that in the entire universe we are but simple and insignificant (Psalm 119:141). Father, we have even turned our back on truth, but Your instructions are perfectly true, and Your justice is eternal (Psalm 119:142). Cause us Lord to fear You, to deeply reverence You, because that’s when You hear our cry, and that’s when You fulfill our desires (Psalm 145:19). Thank You for Your word Lord, because it is true.

Psalm 119:129-136

Application              Do not let iniquity have dominion over me

Today’s Prayer

Lord, I trust You to guide my steps, not letting sin have dominion over me (Psalm 119:133). You do not lead us into temptation, Praise You Father, You deliver us (Matthew 6:13)! Father, forgive us as a nation, and as Your church, for not taking the way of escape that You always allow us to have, which would allow us to bear up under temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13). We admit Father that when we focus on the Spirit, You give us life and peace, but so often we prefer to focus on the flesh, which brings us death (Romans 8:6). Cause us Lord to be committed to submitting to you, for then satan is resisted, and by Your Spirit he flees (James 4:7).

Psalm 119:121-128

Application              Your commands cause me to turn away from every false way

Today’s Prayer

Father, our desire is to turn from every false way (Psalm 119:128), but the truth is Lord, we as a nation and as Your church need forgiveness, for we have enjoyed sin for a season (Hebrews 11:25), for a long season. Father, You have already guaranteed a blessing for us, and we do not need to worry when You Lord are our guarantor (Psalm 119:122). Cause us to love Your commands and look at them as being better than the finest gold (Psalm 119:127), for You do not leave us to the one who oppresses us. Cause us to do what is right Lord (Psalm 119:121).
